On the occasion of the BUILD conference, held last week, Microsoft introduced several new features for Windows 10, including an extension of Continuum mode.
Introducing the Windows 10 September 2014, Joe Belfiore, vice president of the division “Operating Systems” at Microsoft presented the Continuum functionality. Concretely the OS can detect the presence of a physical keyboard to automatically adjust the display the Start menu. When the user simply rests on a touch input, the menu will change to a Modern UI interface similar to Windows 8.x.
At the BUILD, Microsoft introduced some innovations on Continuum, including the management of smartphones. Windows 10 will also be able to identify external keyboards connected via Bluetooth. Then, when the terminal is itself connected to an external display (via HDMI or Miracast), it will get a new ergonomics identical to that of the traditional PC.
Joe Belfiore also illustrates the possibilities universal applications, including those of the Office suite. Smartphone, Word, Excel or Powerpoint indeed have the same code as conventional software for desktop . An open document in Word on the phone, for example, will thus be presented on the external display on the same application but in a display similar to the PC edition of the word processor. The smartphone is transformed into a mini PC on which it is possible to connect the devices.
A concept already seen
The concept is not again. Previously, Canonical, the editor of the GNU / Linux distribution Ubuntu, Ubuntu for Android proposed a concept to provide the interface Unity desktop when the Android smartphone was also connected to a display via HDMI. But this project never emerged and was abandoned. Canonical has never managed to convince manufacturers to pre-install Ubuntu smartphones an image in their devices, their agreements with Google being too strict.
However, at the Mobile World Congress in March Last, the company re-introduced this idea by presenting a tablet equipped with Ubuntu Phone. When it connects a keyboard or mouse, USB or Bluetooth, from the outset, the mobile system transforms and presents an interface optimized for the office.
A potential yet a blur
Switch to PC mode directly from their smartphone, this is a pretty attractive idea. By buying a Lumia, then one could indirectly get a PC and surf Spartan Microsoft Edge via its data connection.
we imagine that this concept could for example make sense in countries emerging in which the first electronic device is often the smartphone and not the PC. Besides for its range Lumia, Microsoft multiplies the entry terminals and covets specifically first-time buyers in the smartphone market. The company estimates that there are about 4 billion people to equip worldwide.
Rest in practice, what are the chances of finding an external monitor, keyboard and mouse without a computer
