The Court of Appeal of L’Aquila in central Italy on Monday acquitted seven scientific convicted at first instance to six years in prison for having underestimated the risks before an earthquake that left more than 300 dead in 2009.
The seven members of the commission “Great Risk” six experts earthquakes and Deputy Director of Civil Protection Bernardo De Bernardinis, had been sentenced in October 2012 to six years in prison for “homicide recklessly. ”
Without explanation, the court held that the facts did not constitute a crime. The reading of the decision in the courtroom was greeted with boos from the public who shouted judges “shame on you, shame on you.”
The expected decision will in principle not be known for several months, after which the prosecutor, who had requested to confirm appeal convictions at trial, can still appeal to the Supreme Court.
The only exception to the general acknowledgment, Mr. of Bernardinis was sentenced to two years in prison for the death of some victims while acquitted for the death of other victims. Without explaining the reasons behind this decision, the court anyway suspended sentence.
