Oculus, the subsidiary of Facebook, has been sentenced to 462 million euros for having used the technology stolen from the company Zenimax

La society of virtual reality, Oculus, a subsidiary of Facebook, which was accused of having designed his helmet Rift, using technology stolen from the company Zenimax, which specializes in video games, was sentenced to pay a fine of 462 million euros.

During the trial, Zenimax explained that some of its patents, computer code, and technical know-how on virtual reality had been used by one of its former employees who had played a key role in the development of this helmet of virtual reality that Oculus has started to market in the past year.

Mark Zuckerberg, the boss of Facebook, which was presented in person before the federal Court in Dallas, ruled that the complaint was “without merit” and that Zenimax did not contribute to any of its technologies.

At the hearing, the boss of Facebook has advanced the technology of this headset was not fully developed when Facebook bought it. “Improving this technology does in fact not yours”, replied the lawyer Zenimax adding : “If you steal my bike, as you repaint and you add a horn, is it in fact yours ?”. In fact Oculus and Zenimax worked together in 2012 for the creation of the demonstration of the science fiction game Doom 3 for the Oculus Rift.

At the hearing, Mark Zuckerberg has not failed to raise the strange latency of the video game publisher. “It is relatively common at the time of the announcement of a big deal, to see people come out of the woodwork and claim ownership of a part of the agreement,” said the boss of Facebook. The action began at a time when Facebook was negotiating the purchase of Oculus… for 1.8 billion euros.

If Zenimax claimed 3.7 billion euros, the jurors have not found evidence of guilt to Facebook but they have retained several felony charges, including several violations of copyright and breaches of contract.
