Brought to democratize on motherboards, laptops and tablets by the end of the year, the C-type USB connector motivate the development of new dedicated devices, starting with stations . home, with for example a first model signed Good Way Technologies
The arrival of the combined USB 3.1 interface and USB C-type connector motivates the enthusiasm of hardware specialists: at Computex Taipei many of the new products unveiled this year embark and one or other of these innovations, when it’s not both. Already present on the latest Apple Macbook well as some Chromebook, type-C especially motivates the enthusiasm: a new universal connector is indeed seen as a major reason for renewal by manufacturers .. starting with prop.
Some therefore reveal now the devices they plan to launch by year-end, when USB 3.1 is officially introduced the next Intel platform (associated Skylake to processors, expected by the end of the third quarter). At Good Way Technologies, we have for example discovered this week a first cradle centered on the connector C-type. It illustrates the potential, but also recalls some aspects possible confusion around the developments of USB.
It should be recalled that the C-type connector and USB 3.0 / 3.1 are not related : the presence of one does not imply that of the other, and a C-type connector may very well be powered by a USB 2.0 controller. Also keep in mind that there are already two implementations of UBS 3.1, the SuperSpeed Gen 1 and its ceiling to 5 Gb / s (same as USB 3.0), and Gen 2, called SuperSpeed More capable of up to 10 Gb / s.
Here we are dealing with a docking station so that we can connect to a computer with a C-type connector, so extending its capabilities. There is no indication on the exposed prototype, but here we limit ourselves to the Gen 1, so to 5 Gb / s theoretical bandwidth via the USB.
At the output, you can enjoy a VGA connector, an HDMI output and a connector Displayport 1.2, enough to allow to control up to three different displays from a single source. Via DisplayPort, we can send one Ultra HD streams, but will be limited to 1080p if two monitors are used. It also benefits from an Ethernet port, jacks with support for 2.1 sound, and other USB connectors (Type-A and Type-C) likely to accommodate themselves to other devices.
The docking station has its own power cord. “ It is powered by USB and therefore by the computer (which it is connected), but not all machines have the same implementation, so we needed an external power supply to ensure the proper functioning “says rightly Good Way. There are in fact five different profiles for power supply via the USB Power Delivery, with power ranging from 5 to 100W. Therefore, it can function independently, from an electrical standpoint, the host PC, and even recharge it, which is necessary on machines like the Macbook, which no longer have only one connector.
In line with this first example, many USB docking stations C-type should appear at the manufacturers by the end of the year. Some will see their motivation boosted by the adoption of the type-C as a connector for the Thunderbolt interface 3 at Intel. For the end user, there is little doubt that this connector will quickly establish itself, but it will remain vigilant to avoid disappointment.
The spelling is not part of standard specifications and should disappear on the final product
