The Dutch cooperative Fairphone pursuing his ambitions for a more equitable world. She officially announced Tuesday the launch of its new smartphone, Fairphone 2. The first smartphone created in 2013 had sold 60,000 copies.
Fairphone 2 runs Android Lollipop (5.1), the mobile operating system developed by Google. It consists of a 5-inch HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 801, an 8MP camera, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space. A removable smartphone like a puzzle
But concretely, what differentiates Fairphone 2 for all other smartphones on the market? If the device is made in China, the company guarantees to use materials “conflict free”, that is to say, not from war zones. Fairphone buys tin and tantalum in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The same cooperative offers on its website to view a map depicting the smartphone manufacturing route. Meanwhile, the company participates in an electrical waste recycling program in Ghana.
Another benefit need to go for repair. First, Fairphone 2 seems to dismantle as easily as a puzzle, with a modular architecture. Moreover, it appears that the smartphone is designed to resist obsolescence. Thanks to its reinforced hull to counter the shocks. “More a phone lasts, the less it creates waste, it requires less resources,” explained the cooperative in February. It therefore remains to test it.
