800 graves were excavated by archaeologists during excavations preventative between December 2011 and June 2013 in the Convent of the Jacobins, which will open in 2017, the convention center of Rennes.
358 years later
Among them, a corpse in an exceptional state of preservation. Inside a lead coffin, opened in March 2014, archaeologists discovered the body of Louise Quengo, lady Brefeillac, who died in 1656, seven years after her husband Toussaint Perrien.
This is the reliquary of the heart of the knight who identified this woman wrapped in a cloak, dressed as a nun, holding a crucifix in his hands.
The clothes will be exhibited
“We had to act quickly” , remembers Rozenn Colleter, Inrap anthropologist, who accompanied the remains to the forensic institute in Toulouse where scanner and autopsy helped rebuild the medical life of Louise Quengo.
A conference on this discovery “unprecedented” (presented to the press on Tuesday) will be held June 21 in Rennes in the context of national archeology days.
Louise clothing, which are the subject of restoration work will be exposed later. As for the body, it will be re-buried in the coming weeks to the cemetery from the north, in Rennes.
