MegaUpload closed, Kim Dotcom arrested. And eradicated piracy? – ZDNet France

January 2012, the FBI announcement caused a stir: the direct download site MegaUpload closed by US authorities and charged seven people. The whimsical founder of the service, Kim Dotcom, was arrested in his luxury New Zealand property by a horde of police officers.

And the United States have the means. Copyright infringement? This is only a charge among others. Conspiracy to commit acts of racketeering, breach of intellectual property and money laundering are also among the charges.

The extradition of Kim Dotcom under appeal

It’s heavy, and also vitally important to legally justify extradition of Kim Dotcom to the US. The years have passed since, and the creator of MegaUpload still resides in New Zealand, continuing even regularly talking to him.

Very active on social networks, it has for example recently exchanged a few pleasantries with John McAfee. Follower of provocation, he mostly announced January 20, 2017 of the successor to MegaUpload. We must dare, especially that opens today the appeal hearing of his extradition.

But users of 2012-they would adopt in 2017 a V2 MegaUpload? Have they not given to illegal downloading fault of online services where consuming content? In short, the closure of MegaUpload she changed things?

“The direct download of content (…) is being reorganized rather than regression, although quality service in terms of available rates dropped significantly since the closure of MegaUpload “Idate observed in a study published just months after closing.

earlier allowed indeed already suppose, and in particular the legal decisions blocking or banning Pirate Bay. The weaker found P2P traffic has been transient, and it consistently.

The “scourge of piracy is very high”

Several MegaUpload competing websites, however, felt the breath of the bullet and decided to lay low: reduced flow, prohibition of anonymous upload … This was the case of RapidShare. In March 2015, the site is closed, but not by the FBI.

According to the specialized website TorrentFreak, the implementation of anti-piracy measures in 2012 led to the departure of many of the users of RapidShare. The service would have lost the majority of its customers and would more likely ensure the continuity of its lack of sufficient income activity.

For these customers, there are alternatives. P2P, it has declined, has not been eradicated either. Moreover, the legal streaming is not the only one to have gained popularity. Illegal downloading has not disappeared with MegaUpload. No one seemed also to suggest in 2012 that it would be so.

What about the practice in 2016? Impartial studies on the subject, that is to say independent of the beneficiaries, are rare. In the opinion of the Alpa, “the scourge of piracy is very high in France” with 14 million French Internet users accessing each month to a site dedicated to audiovisual piracy, including 7.6 million users of direct download (DDL).

As for the use of DDL,” reached its highest level with 7.6 million monthly users. ” These sites attract even more French visitors in 2012, closing year of the reference sector, MegaUpload. Between hacking sites and holders of copyrights is the never ending story.
