The announcement is a new operating system designed specifically for connected objects. The name is chosen by ARM mbed OS and will be available in alpha version by the end of the year.
Free and built on an open standard, this OS is intended to unify the ecosystem Internet of things while alliances between manufacturers already begin to multiply (AllSeen Alliance, Open Interconnect Consortium …) as well as development platforms (AllJoyn, Busit, revolver, Sen.se …). This operating system is also compatible with the 6LoWPAN standard for IPv6 Low Power Wireless Area Networks. This is somehow an adaptation of IPv6 network protocol for small bandwidths, sitting up a priori to low data transmission needs of connected objects.
But mbed OS does not come alone. The operating system is accompanied by the development platform mbed Device Server. Distributed under license, it will allow companies to manage their fleet of connected objects and secure data transmission and collection.
