Facebook revises its policy on nicknames – France Mobiles

Facebook has revised its policy on the use of pseudonyms in specific cases including privacy and security could be affected. The social network is switched from using the birth name to that used in everyday life.

Facebook has always wanted users to avoid pseudonyms. The leaders of the social network now see in this platform, a different place from the other communities on the internet where anonymity and many fake profiles reign.

This policy had been controversial with many transsexuals, drag queens and drag king, who had been warned to change their nickname so they use their real names. This controversy has reached such proportions that the LGBT community had planned a demonstration in San Francisco to put pressure on Facebook.

However, before the event, representatives from various LGBT groups met with officials of Facebook in order to discuss the problems. Following this meeting, a status posted on the social network by Chris Cox apologized to the LGBT community and those whose lives have been adversely affected by the policy of Facebook.

The social network does not abandon its war against the use of pseudonyms or against fictitious account, far from it. It simply takes a more realistic and human approach, taking into consideration that some accounts do not use real names and surnames for personal reasons and for their safety. This is the case of “Sister Roma”, a drag queen who helped make Facebook reconsider its decision.
