The extended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will be proposed by Microsoft on some terminals equipped with the new Intel architecture Skylake.
In a post published on January 15, Microsoft had said that the support policy provided for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The first will be subject to updates until January 14, 2020, and the second until 10 January 2023. And that, both for their editions public and business.
The editor noted in his post that the support of both old OS would be restricted to a limited period for new terminals equipped Skylake processors from Intel. For the PC, the support period should be extended until 17 July 2017. In connection with its hardware partners, Microsoft has released the official list of eligible Skylake terminals to support this extension (see Dell sites, HP, Lenovo and NEC).
Not surprisingly, Microsoft advises to plan to migrate these Skylake terminals to Windows 10 rather quickly. “After July 2017, only the security updates to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will be most critical realized on these machines, and only in the event that they do not cause a risk of compatibility or reliability of Windows 7 / 8.1 on other terminals, “says the editor indicating wanting and maintain some alignment between its OS and machine architectures for which they have been optimized.
The question that will be the impact the decision on corporate migration policies to Windows 10. This ad could encourage some particular DSI to postpone the purchase of machinery Skylake waiting to be fully ready to switch to Windows 10. For others, the fact that PC Skylake can no longer downgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1 may also prove problematic, especially if those ancient OS must continue to run applications vigils.
