Two men were arrested Monday in Ajaccio in the neighborhood where two firefighters and a policeman were wounded in an ambush on Christmas Eve, does one police source said.
There are two brothers born in 1989 and 1993 on suspicion of involvement in ambush. They were arrested in the sensitive area of the Gardens of the Emperor on the heights of Ajaccio.
The searches were carried out by officers of the public security and judicial police in several building this set with strong North African population, warrant issued by a judge.
Several firefighters called to a false fire, were wounded during the night of 24 to 25 December. On board their rescue vehicle, accompanied by a police car, they had fallen into an ambush.
The fire truck had been stoned by hooded men shouting, according to testimony rescuers “Corsicans shit, you’re not at home!”
The attackers injured several firefighters blows of golf clubs and sticks and complaints had been filed.
On December 25, several hundred people gathered outside the Ajaccio Prefecture to denounce this wave of violence. Protesters were then returned to the Gardens of the Emperor and in other areas with strong North African population.
Some chanted racist slogans as “Arabs out” and depredations had occurred, causing no casualties, especially in a small multipurpose room used as a prayer room for Muslims.
The interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, announced December 30 that the violence in Ajaccio Christmas would not remain unpunished. He added that security would be enhanced in the Jardins district of the Emperor, including the fight against drug trafficking.
Two men aged 18 and 19 living in the gardens of the Emperor already was indicted after lighting a fire of wood pallets and rampage of a school in this district on December 24.
A third man, believed to have participated in this action, is on the run.
