The fight against the use of some of its subscribers to VPN has never been a priority for Netflix. “We do not encourage such practices” , told us the site limply, there is little yet. A tolerance now over.
The SVOD service announced January 13 that it is able to identify hackers who use proxies, the Unlockers or VPN to access other titles beyond the borders of their territory. Netflix will then ensure that these techniques “will provide access to the service in the country where they are used” . In other words, to make them completely useless geographical unlocking tools.
How?
“Netflix uses a variety of technologies to properly geotag its members and prevent attempts to circumvent the appropriate geolocation” , we laconically announced a spokesman. Nothing revolutionary as indicated by the official post: the means are the same as those currently used by other companies. This is particularly true of HBO Now, the OTT service of the American chain that already tracks the fake IP addresses of members outside of the United States to block their accounts.
Why?
Last week at CES 2016, Netflix announced to be available in 190 countries. So an almost global presence, with the exception of China, North Korea or Syria. And this is what changes everything.
The site submits to the will of the rights-holders to negotiate content rights for a given territory. Netflix would be found in a delicate position if he continued to ignore users who violate the terms of its contracts. But do not despair of one day offering a homogenous world catalog. “Now that we are a global Internet TV services, we hope that our catalog will become available for all territories” , explained to us the company.
The question is whether this anti-war VPN will collateral damage. “We are confident that this change will not impact the members that do not use proxies” , tries to reassure Netflix.
