Android : farewell CyanogenMod, hello Lineage OS – 01net.com

Cyanogen is down. The derived distributions of Android CyanogenOS and CyanogenMod, as well as all the services provided by Cyanogen Inc. will stepped down from the 31 December next. The only consolation for the fans : if the development teams are moving away from Cyanogen, they are launching a new project : Lineage OS, still based on Android… which will be, for the moment, that a certified copy of the famous alternative distribution.

did You say “Cyanogen” ?

eight years ago approximately was born Cyanogen. A project Open Source conducted by enthusiasts who managed to make a name for himself in the world of mobile telephony. The reason for this ? Unlike the versions of Android tweaked by Samsung, Motorola, HTC or LG, CyanogenMod offered very quickly the latest version of Android… And offered the opportunity to geeks to further customize their smartphone.

Reserved for the do-it-yourselfer, the installation of Cyanogenmod required to know a few maneuvers are often complex (such as the rooting of the device, for example) to be correctly performed.

given the success of the OS alternative, the “daddy” of CyanogenMod Steve Kondike has chosen in 2013 to launch a commercial version of CyanogenMod, under the puzzled looks of the community of users of the software. It then creates Cyanogen Inc, with a purpose : to propose an alternative to the Google OS to manufacturers of smartphones. It is as well as brands such as OnePlus or WileyFox have embedded versions of “Cyanogen OS” in some of their devices.

But the success was short-lived. In particular, because of poor strategic decisions, such as the ban on OnePlus to use Cyanogen after a deal with another manufacturer. But also because of a disagreement cordial to the head of the company, in particular between Kondike and the boss Kirt Mcmaster, famous for its outputs thundering.

Lineage OS, on the ashes of CyanogenMod

Still, the incredible work done on CyanogenMod’s not going to as much from the forgotten. The OS non-commercial will be renamed LineageOS for starting on the right foot. With in a first time, exactly the same code. What provide a good basis to work on and continue to develop an OS alternative. On the website LineageOS.org the developers have announced that more information on the project will be data on Tuesday.

What about smartphones running Cyanogen OS ?

That the owners of smartphones running Cyanogen OS is assured, (OnePlus One, WileyFox Strom et al and ZUK Z1 Lenovo), they don’t turn into a brick on the 31st December next.

however, Remains a big unknown : WileyFox and Lenovo will continue to provide software support for their device, due to lack of structure able to ensure continuity of service, or will they quickly migrate to Android classic to their customers ?

users of The One Plus, them, could see their terminal migrated under OxygenOS, the operating system house on the basis of Android used in the devices recent of the brand, such as the One Plus 3.
