Uber puts a stop to the autonomous cars in California – The Point

Uber announced on Wednesday that it would put a stop to his experience of self-driving cars in California because the authorities of that State have refused to grant permits to the vehicles involved.

The introduction of these autonomous cars in the streets of San Francisco has caused a dispute between the Department of motor vehicles (DMV) service and the VTC.

“We stopped our experience of cars without a driver in California because the DMV has refused to grant permits for our vehicles,” said the San Francisco-based company in a statement sent to AFP.

“We now look at where we can deploy this fleet but we remain 100% committed in California, and will redouble our efforts to develop rules acceptable to the national level”.

Uber was testing its self-driving cars in California since December 14, despite a request by the authorities in california have warned that their presence in the streets was illegal.

the giant of The booking service-cars with driver challenged the interpretation of the VDD, according to which its vehicles are in need of a specific permit, highlighting that they have the same characteristics as the cars of the american manufacturer Tesla equipped with a system of driver assistance Autopilot.

Anthony Levandowski, vice-president of the group, had said last week that, as for the Tesla, the person standing at the edge of autonomous cars Uber has the ability to take back the controls at any time.

He complained about an “uneven application of the regulation in the State”.

The DMV requested more guarantees in terms of security.

According to some information, one of the cars in question would not be stopped at a red light, and autonomous vehicles don’t respect the bike lanes when they turn.

The proponents of self-driving cars claim that the technology can reduce more than 90% of the accidents, which are due primarily to human error.

Since its debut in 2010, Uber has become a global phenomenon despite regulatory hurdles and a resistance of taxis that are traditional.

Uber was recently valued at more than $ 60 billion (57,42 € billion) but has accumulated losses at the option of its expansion and the arrival of competitors such as Lyft.
