Corsica killed three tourists, two injured in a car accident … – BFMTV.COM

Three tourists were killed and two others seriously injured in a climbing accident occurred Wednesday on the GR20 in Corsica. The accident occurred in the middle of the afternoon to more than 1,500 meters above sea level on the route of the hiking trail 20 (GR20) that runs through all Corsica above the village of Asco .

Other tourists were missing. The tour group had left the Asco ski resort to go to the most technical and difficult passage of the GR20, the circus I Cascittoni (bass drums) also called “Circus of loneliness” which mountains rising to over 2,000 meters.



Major emergency resources deployed

Very significant emergency resources have been implemented with a command post at Asco. Fifty rescuers including high mountain police and firefighters, including high mountain specialists were engaged in this operation, and five helicopters (three squirrels civil Security and two military air Pumas based on Ventiseri-Solenzara in Corsica) and about twenty vehicles.



One of the most serious mountain accidents in Corsica

This accident is one of the most serious that has overshadowed the Corsican mountains. Mountainside Canyon, the Cascittoni are an often dreaded passage through the mountain. It crosses using ladders, chains and cables fixed on sometimes vertical walls during the third stage (of 15) of the GR20 starting from the North.

It requires a good knowledge of the mountain, an excellent physical condition and quality of equipment. Thousands of trekkers from around the world, often inexperienced, annually traverse the GR20 (200 km in two weeks) reputed to be one of the toughest in the world and where frequent accidents occur.
