YouTube Gaming: what you should know about Google Twitch – Numerama

It’s a battle of giants in the making. A little less than a year after buying Twitch by Amazon for the astronomical sum of $ 970 million, Google has stepped into the arena with the intention to do battle. The Mountain View company announced indeed the imminent arrival of YouTube Gaming, which will be exclusively dedicated to video games platform.

“ This summer we will launch YouTube Gaming, a new mobile application and a website to allow you to stay connected to the games, the players and the gaming universe that interests you, with videos, live broadcasts and the largest community of players on the web. – all in one place “, writes Alan Joyce, product manager at YouTube

YouTube Gaming will be a worthy opponent for Twitch. Both services will target the same audience and offer more or less the same functionality. And if Twitch can build on its age, with a loyal community that now has his habits on the platform, Google will deploy all his punching power and leverage its subsidiary, YouTube, trying to pass him before.

Detail which is important, Google tried to buy Twitch but Amazon was faster. Determined to have its own gaming service, the US group finally chose to build its own platform even if that need to start from scratch.

The Mountain View company will benefit E3, which takes place from June 16 to 18 in Los Angeles, to present a little more detail the contours of YouTube Gaming. The company already promises access to an extensive catalog videogame (over 25,000 games have their own page), to better target videos for a particular game (for let’s play, the speedruns, the walkthroughs …).

Until the official launch of YouTube Gaming, Google promises to publish useful tools for the players so they can enjoy the retransmission of games in the best possible conditions. The announcement in May of the ability to stream live video at a frequency of 60 frames per second in HTML5 is part of this strategy (ditto for 4K 60fps videos).

Among the expected changes, YouTube Gaming will rely on a new live broadcast mode which will be delivered with better moderation tools and reduced latency for comments. The service will obviously be available on Android and iOS, a mobile version and tablet. Tools of personalization and recommendation are also planned.

YouTube Gaming will be available in the summer, first in the United States and the United Kingdom. The group did not say when its new platform happen in other countries, including France.
