IG Nobels, science laugh … then think – Le Figaro

The “IG Nobel” awarded annually to “research that makes people laugh, and thought-provoking.” The winners in 2014 were honored Thursday in the United States.

An ode to improbable research, strange and funny. Researchers also have humor and, failing Nobel Prize may be awarded by the “IG Nobel Prizes,” organized by the scientific magazine Annals of improbable research . Vintage 2014 was unveiled Thursday at Harvard (USA). Ten teams from five continents have been distinguished for this 24th edition, by five “real” Nobel Prize

• Physics. Coefficient of friction of the banana skin

the Japanese Kitasato University measured the friction between a shoe sole and a banana skin, and between the same banana peel and land, when a human foot has the misfortune to meet this formidable enemy of balance

• Neuroscience. Jesus breakfast

A Chinese-Canadian team questioned the neural networks involved, and resulting behaviors among people who see the face of Jesus to draw on their toast. A detour to better understand how faces

• Psychology is recognized. Morality belongs to those who sleep early

Australian researchers, British and American have come together to show that in men, as with many predators, nocturnal creatures had the soul blacker than their daytime counterparts: night owls are more narcissistic, manipulative, Machiavellian psychopaths that layer- earlier. Especially males

• Medicine: ham to stop nosebleeds

American and Indian researchers have focused on the “unique” case of a 4 year old child suffering from Glanzmann thrombasténie a rare disorder characterized by defective platelet aggregation. On two occasions due to “special circumstances”, inserting pork shoulder into the nostril of the child has been able to stop an uncontrollable nosebleed. The bleeding has stopped completely within 24 hours, and ham removed after 72 hours of treatment. That is when the pharmacy is closed and you do not cotton at home

• Public Health. Cats make they mad their owners

Researchers from the Czech Republic, Japan, the United States and India have addressed owners tomcats. On the menu: personality changes in young women with latent Toxoplasma (toxoplasmosis is a disease transmitted by cats, especially dangerous during pregnancy); looking for a link between this same toxoplasmosis and schizophrenia, among men this time; and exploring the relationship between human depression and cat bite. So think before hosting a kitty home, especially as the dog has unexpected qualities (see below) …

• Biology: the dog turd serves compass

In the Czech Republic, Germany and Zambia, researchers are interested in dog poop. The doggies are so generally we do they learn their needs by aligning in a north-south axis. Useful for orientation in the city, where there is a lack of mossy tree trunks

Researchers knew XE9 & #; XE9 have pr & #; feel their work on reindeer and (fake) bear.

• Arctic Sciences: reindeer fear the bear is shown

Norwegians and Germans wanted to test the reaction of seeing reindeer human dressed as polar bears. Verdict: reindeer flees, not to go into a corner but laugh because he is afraid, say the researchers. Sounds silly, but it helps to know, without using a real polar bear, if it is a predator reindeer

• Arts. Ugliness hurts

It lets you do the test by pinching your neighbors museum: Italian researchers have them drawn on guinea pigs with a laser beam to measure the pain, as they watched a painting ugly or beautiful canvas. Answer: beauty alleviates pain. To think through the “fig-fig-media picture left” hospital managers

The Nobel Prize Eric Maskin and Richard Roberts go xfb & #; tent Spanish sausages.

• Nutrition: Sausage faeces

The baby poop contains probiotics. But these probiotics are needed to make fermented sausages. You see the connection? Spanish researchers, themselves, saw it, and … it works. All financed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness

• Economy. Merits (hidden) underground economy

This is not a scientific study, but an official publication of the European Union signed by the Italian government, which is distinguished here. Italy has been commended for during his tenure as head of the Union, each member country encouraged to increase the size of their economies to include income from prostitution, drug trafficking of smuggling and other illegal transactions.
