Apple began to store user data in China … – Developpez.com

China had expressed concern for Apple products. Most recently, it would have banned the devices from Apple in government purchases, government departments, local governments and the central Communist Party for “security concerns.” Apple seems to have figure out how to regain the trust of the Chinese government.

In a press release from the Wall Street Journal, Apple said “ have added China Telecom to its list of suppliers of data center to increase bandwidth and improve performance “of iCloud services for its customers in China. iCloud is the platform for data storage in Apple’s line that allows users to save their documents, music, images, and … to have access at any time and anywhere.

China Telecom also confirmed that Apple has started storing data on its infrastructure since Aug. 8 and after “ 15 months of rigorous testing and evaluation .” For now, China Telecom is the only provider of iCloud services in China. However, Apple reassures users that it “ takes the security and privacy of users very seriously ” and that the data stored is encrypted in China, which means that China Telecom is not able to access the content.

According to Sandy Shen, an analyst at Gartner, iCloud data storage in China “ would help provide a better user experience than the direct connection to the local server and allow faster and more stable access iCloud services . ” It would also allow Apple to mitigate concerns of Chinese authorities in relation to Apple products.

To recap, Apple is not the only foreign firm to challenge the Chinese government. The latter would also prohibit the use of certain Microsoft products in its administration and also prohibits the purchase of Symantec security tools and Kaspersky. China intends to limit the use of foreign goods to local produce for reasons of espionage and user safety. Moreover, it has recently opened an antitrust investigation against Microsoft
