Apple announced Monday its first automatic security update for OS X computers to patch a critical vulnerability that was released on Friday by the Ministry Homeland Security and the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.
Apple and dozens of other technology companies have products that could be at risk
The vulnerability was discovered in the Network Time Protocol, or NTP, which is used to synchronize clocks on computer networks, and can be used by hackers to execute arbitrary code on Macs running on Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite

Following this discovery, Apple has decided to release a patch Automatic safety to expedite the whole process and make sure it does not reach Mac users as quickly as possible given the “severity” vulnerabilities. “The update is transparent,” said spokesman Bill Evans Apple. “It does not even require a reboot. “The official Apple also said that the company is not aware of any cases where vulnerable Mac were targeted by hackers looking to exploit the recently discovered vulnerability.
The update is available from the Apple menu
Apple has deployed its automatic security update there two years, but he never used to broadcast similar patches. Instead, the company released its updates via its regular update system, which needs the intervention of the user.
Mac users running OS X Yosemite (10.10), OS X Mavericks (10.9) and OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) and find the update now available in the update mechanism of the Mac OS X software, available from the Apple menu and selecting the “Update Software”, the update is only 1.4MB and moved very quickly. Note that if you have automatic updates enabled for the software and security updates, NTP was possibly already installed for you, but you better check manually anyway
