In order to rebalance the distribution of frequency bands to operators, ARCEP has awarded 5 MHz to Free in the 1800 MHz band.
The frequencies in the 1800 MHz band are generally used for 2G. At the launch of 4G, Bouygues Telecom had approval to convert its 2G network 4G. This Agreement contained the condition. Indeed, Bouygues Telecom had to cede part of its Free frequency range to rebalance the bands allocated to operators.
ARCEP has just granted 5 MHz to 1800 MHz band Free. The operator of the Iliad Group will therefore expand its mobile internet network. The assignment of the band 1800 MHz to Free will not stop these 5 MHz for the other operators, SFR and Orange, will also return 5 MHz each. The operator of the Iliad Group therefore end up with 15 MHz on the frequency of 1800 MHz.
These frequencies will be used by Free from 1 January 2015. However, if the whole of metropolitan France benefits from this new frequency range, it will not be the case for Marseille, Nice and Paris. The OM will have to wait until April 1, 2015. As in Nice and Paris, deployment should occur by 1 July 2015. It is also noteworthy that this beach will allow it to offer 4G +.
Free will have to pay a fee for the use of 15 MHz. The amount of this fee is still to be assessed by the State Council in the coming weeks.
