2. Solar Impulse Solar plane stands still in Japan – Ouest-France

The weather has interrupted the journey of Solar Impulse 2.

“The weather window to Hawaii deteriorated. We decided to make an intermediate landing in Nagoya! “, announced the official Twitter website of the organizers.

Piloted by André Borschberg Switzerland, solar aircraft was forced Monday to stop its expansion to the Pacific and to get in a holding pattern above the Sea of Japan.

The unexpected step was confirmed by Bertrand Piccard, the second Swiss rider to switch to the airplane. “We will wait for better conditions to start again,” , said Bertrand Piccard.

“We say thank you to our Japanese friends who have been very accommodating to give us permission at the last minute, to put us on their territory” , he added.

Technological Challenge

2 Solar Impulse took off Sunday at 02 h 39 (18 h 39 GMT Saturday) from Nanjing ( east China) to the most dangerous stage of its world tour, during which the Swiss driver had to take six days and six nights.

This departure from Nanjing, where the plane was confined since April 21, was postponed several times already due to inclement weather.

Never Solar Impulse 2 had flown over an ocean and had remained in the air more than 24 hours: that’s how this crossing Pacific 8 500 km represented a technological challenge and a historic aviation achievement.
