The Debian Project
Debian is a community and democratic organization, whose purpose is the development of operating systems based exclusively on free software.
Each system, named himself Debian brings together around a kernel many elements that can be developed independently of each other for several hardware architectures . These elements, core programs etlogiciels filling out the application core, are in the form of “packages” that can be installed as needed (see Software Distribution). The whole operating system plus software is called a distribution.
System is generally thought these operating systems in Debian GNU / Linux , the GNU / Linux distribution Debian because until 2009 it was the only fully functional branch. But other Debian distributions are under development in 2013: Debian GNU / Hurd and Debian GNU / kFreeBSD. The Debian release “Squeeze” is the first to be distributed with the kFreeBSD kernel in addition to the Linux kernel.
Debian is used as the basis for many other distributions like Knoppix and Ubuntu that are very successful.
In late 2005, the Debian distribution was chosen by the City of Munich to equip some 14,000 PC computers which then formed its computers. In 2014, a report prepared by the new municipal team announced 14 million euros (M €) as migration costs, partially offset by € 11m economies and licenses equipment. The cost of the return to Windows is estimated by the same study in 3 M € materials plus the cost of licenses, known as negotiable. (Source Wikipedia)
