Microsoft has just taken the decision to be more transparent about piracy of their hotmail accounts. The company will start to inform users of any attempt to “hack” on their accounts.
This turnaround position comes after new revelations indicate that Microsoft has deliberately concealed this reprehensible practice. The case evokes precise targeting to well-known personalities. Some would come from a Chinese network referred to as the AS4808, which has been associated with major espionage campaigns which US intelligence officials have publicly attributed to China.
Citing two people with knowledge the issue, Reuters evokes attacks in June 2009 but Microsoft would have learned that two years later. Their origins are due to a vulnerability in the e-mail service that allowed the injection of malicious software to hijack email. The source claims that Microsoft has begun to address the issue but taking the decision to hide the details. It merely asked those concerned to change their password.
The decision not to disclose this information was taken after discussions behind closed doors Scott Charney, big boss of security at Microsoft, and Brad Smith. He spoke of the desire to maintain strong links with the Chinese government.
In an intervention, the software giant backtracked. Microsoft announced that it now will inform its users of any attempted hacking. These alerts do not necessarily mean that the accounts have really been hacked but only that they were under attack.
