The French companies are beginning to look closely at Facebook’s virtual reality helmet. This is particularly the case in industry, tourism and real estate.
At the time of pre-orders Oculus Rift, it has to consider what uses could have the virtual reality helmet of Facebook in the professional world. For over a year a beta version of Oculus was offered to developers. A pre-launch period which allowed the companies interested in the first floor concept on pilot projects. After this phase, the tests give a more concrete vision applications that could be implemented in a company.
Prepare a crisis operation on a Seveso classified site
This exploratory period shows that the first Oculus could find interest in the industry. “The Oculus Rift may for example allow to prepare a crisis operation on a Seveso classified site affected by an incident, an oil infrastructure, nuclear or chemical,” explains Jean-Claude Guyard, Director of Labs Innovation Capgemini France. Immersed in an immersive 3D environment reproducing the targeted place, emergency responders will be able to identify the ground and repeating gestures to perform to repair a breakdown or leakage of fuel. “This exercise will enable them to be more effective once there, but also to secure their intervention,” adds Jean-Claude Guyard.
Also in industrial, eyeglass Facebook are also identified as a good way to training. “The Oculus can for example be an interesting learning solution to capture new procedures on a production site,” said David-Henri Bismuth, head of Lab Niji (who accompanied the realization of a proof of concept on the subject). And Jean-Claude Guyard at Capgemini added: “Major automakers also are working on Oculus environments to train their teams before the inauguration of new production lines.”
Many possible applications in the health sector
But for David-Henri Bismuth, capacity training Oculus may interest many other sectors. “We are working for a French academic group on training Oculus applications around the theme health,” the expert mentioned in particular Niji. “In this area, the Oculus can allow eg to design immersive guides the human body, or to project the neural level like what provides the Neuron application”. But David-Henri Bismuth evokes other applications in the medical field, such as surgical operating support, remotely, with 360 cameras in the block.
The Oculus considered as flight simulator
On the side of Lab’Innovation Capgemini, one also notes an industrial interest in aviation, including French, for Oculus Rift, again for training needs. Immersive spectacle indeed offer a much lighter alternative to flight simulators, allowing pilots to become familiar with the new aircraft models. “They might as well train at home, on their own computer, via an application Oculus simulating dashboard and flying effects,” says one at Capgemini.
Visiting a well real estate sold on plan in virtual reality
The Oculus could also find numerous applications for customer relationship management. On this ground, Niji has notably led a mission on behalf of the developer Sogeprom (a subsidiary of Société Générale). “The idea is to offer a virtual tour of a property sold on plan and to rely for that on 3D plans already designed by the architect,” said David-Henri Bismuth.
In any other field of customer experience, some French tourism players are studying for their Oculus of the track to offer to visit some tourist places, including areas that are not accessible to the public for conservation reasons (such as Lascaux caves) or have disappeared (like the archaeological site of Palmyra destroyed by Daech).
And always on CRM, spectacle Facebook open new perspectives on the front of support. “The Oculus, with their 360 degrees, provide a good way to offer remote technical assistance, on a complex industrial equipment for example. Especially since it is possible to appear in the plan of an eyewear Equipment superimposed via augmented reality function of Oculus, or access to technical documentation, “said Jean-Claude Guyard.
Visit his future car and choose the options
Finally, brand communication is mentioned by experts as land development potential for Oculus. “Typically, it is to offer an immersive experience of a product,” said David-Henri Bismuth. On this ground, several French groups have already committed to concrete projects. This is the case of Renault-Nissan with an application to visit his future car and choose the options, Total which intends to follow the path of the heart of a gasoline engine via the Oculus, or Nivea who designed a skin discovery environment at the molecular level to promote a cream (it is proposed on an exhibition space in Paris – La Défense).
