5G : Orange and Ericsson clambering beyond 10 Gb/s in laboratory – ZDNet France

While the operators to boost 4G blows of aggregation of the frequencies, allowing to exceed the 300 Mb/s in theory, the 5G is gradually becoming a technological reality palpable. Of course, the commercial launch of 5G, which is not expected before 2020 in Europe. But things are moving quickly, both in terms of standardization, notably through its many public/private partnerships that technologies with products for telecoms equipment manufacturers (components, networks).

Recall that the 5G is characterized, of course, speeds higher than 10 gigabits per second, but above all by the capacity and latency very low, which is a major advantage for the millions of connected objects that are currently undertaking. The 5G has much vocation to support the development of the Internet of things.

Next to telecom equipment, things go so. Orange and its partner Ericsson announced and have carried out a wireless communication with flow rates higher than 10 Gbit/s. Orange underlines the fact that this laboratory test is based on the bricks of the future technology of 5G of the operator and the oem, including the centimetric waves (which have frequencies about 10 times higher than the waves, which is currently used), new generation of antennas using the ” massive MIMO “, with a technical focus radio advanced specific to the 5G (” beam tracking”) which allows to make converge the power of radio waves towards the position of the mobile, improving the efficiency of the system 5G.

Were used prototypes of base station and mobile phones 5G weighing several tens of kilos. Prototypes more miniaturized will appear in the coming months, moving the two companies.

“The significant increase in rates, including mobility, is one of the promises of the 5G. These flows always more important will be necessary with the new usages such as virtual reality, augmented reality, or the needs of the professional world. Thanks to our partnership 5G with Ericsson, we are preparing the future of the network,” said Alain Maloberti, Senior Vice President, Orange Labs Networks.

According to the report on mobility by Ericsson, there will be half a billion subscriptions to the 5G on the horizon 2022 at the global level.

For telecoms equipment manufacturers, and always fragile, this 5G will it be a windfall ? Not really, afraid of Gartner. “Yes, it’s going to create activity, but this will not be at the same level as for the 3G and the 4G. Because the deployments will be very different, and I think that some developing countries will see not even the color. It will not be an activity as a carrier but once again, it is essential for these actors to position themselves today and to show that they are ready”, explained Sylvain Fabre, analyst for Gartner.

The operators will also have to specify their ambitions. “It is up to them to find the good value, good position in the value chain. Will they be essential ? Because in the field of connected objects and networks, the operators are not only actors and more agile, such as Sigfox, can change the deal.”

“on the other hand, the operators have strengths quasi-exclusive as the promise of quality, scalability, the possibility to be tailor-made for industry, billing, and of course the security and robustness”, points out Sylvain Fabre. In short, at a time when operators are trying at any price to enhance their pipes (with the content), 5G associated with the Internet of things could well figure as a springboard.
