Google is testing an authentication procedure without password – 01net

Passwords, as we know, are the Achilles heel of computer security. Either they are good, but hard to remember. Either they are weak, and easy to hack. That’s why Google is testing an alternative method: authentication without password. On PC, the user enters their email address and mobile app receives a notification that Google asked to confirm access. Eventually, he will enter a two-digit numerical code that Google displays in the PC browser. And that’s it.

Reddit Capture –

This feature is currently being tested by “a small group of users” , confirmed Google with the Android Police website. On Reddit forum, one of the testers posted screenshots that show the different steps. For this to work, you must first associate the smartphone to this feature. If the smartphone is not physically accessible or if the network does not work, the user can always return to the classic procedure, based on the password. Moreover, it is advisable to activate the automatic locking on the smartphone to prevent a third person with physical access – as a result of theft or loss, for example – can not authenticate.

Yahoo has done

Google is not the first to develop this type of authentication. In October, Yahoo launched the same type of functionality as the “key account” (“Key Account”). When the user wants to authenticate to the gate, he simply enter their email address. It will then receive a notification on its Yahoo Mail application. At Google, however, is not yet known when this feature will be available, or even if it will be.

On Reddit, some believe that the process of Google is finally longer than to enter a password. But this is only true if the password is simple or rarely changed, which is not advisable. For someone who uses a password randomly generated and which changes regularly, this authentication method will save time.
