Facebook: strengthening its DRM, Oculus has opened the door to piracy – 01net.com

All the players who wear virtual reality share the same discourse is only the beginning. First steps that do not necessarily rhyme with opening and usually mean there is still time to impose its technology through exclusive content. Left to do everything to avoid interoperability, even put a spoke in the wheels of the projects of some genius hacker, that shake the boundaries between the various existing solutions.

A desire to strengthen security

This is what happened late last week. Oculus, a subsidiary of Facebook, updated the Rift virtual reality headset her last Friday. A small patch that took effect in particular – even if it was a priori not the first purpose – to block the operation of Revive project. . Oculus sought a priori to strengthen its weapons against piracy of its games

In fact, the Revive application allowed users of HTC Vive rotate exclusive titles helmet Facebook: Lucky’s Tale and Oculus Dreamdeck. To enhance security, Oculus has made sure his helmet connects to its platform of digital locks (DRM), was commenting on CrossVR, one of the developers of the Revive project on Reddit.

He also explained the program he co-develops fact, among others, believe in the Oculus Rift application is connected but is however not able to do the same with the online platform. In other words, late last week, the subsidiary of Facebook had taken over in the battle of the virtual reality where everyone stays at home.

A sacred comemorative

But it was not counting on a small turnaround. Another developer, LibreVR, has indeed published a long post on the GitHub page Developer Revive project during the weekend. It introduced a new version of the code and wrote: “I really did not want to follow this path, but I feel that there is no alternative. This version bypasses the platform DRM Oculus for turning games with Unreal Engine. ”

A small bomb which means the attack against Facebook has not only failed but has even pushed his opponent to cross a technical course. Where previous versions of Revive “translated” Oculus functions of the runtime so they are interpreted by the OpenVR API, which is consistent with the Vive, the new version goes much further. It uses the same technique of injecting code but this time to override the Oculus of the verification system that determines whether the user actually owns the game he wants to run.

Virtual reality, real hackers

We now understand what LibreVR way talks. For technical feat opens wide the doors to potential hackers. And the developer to specify, in a post on Reddit, it does not encourage piracy and he urged users not to use this library to run pirated games. He also explains that it is possible to return to a previous version of Oculus program update, which will avoid having to use the version of Revive that facilitates piracy.

Furthermore, LibreVR, always him, indicated the site Motherboard if developers Revive project were another option, they immediately cease to circumvent DRM Oculus. For now, only the titles running on the Unreal Engine are concerned but LibreVR of already announced that the next version of Revive allow turning games with the Unity engine, another engine of popular games run despite the patch Oculus …

Meanwhile the response of Facebook, it seems a long time since Palmer Luckey, founder of virtual reality helmet project, indicated that he would be nothing wrong with that the hackers will attempt the Rift games run on any platform. He said at the time (five months ago) on Reddit that he would not “block people only on its material” … A Menlo Park, things have certainly changed.
