The Chinese city of Heyuan, which already held the world record for the largest number of dinosaur eggs found on its territory, further expanded its collection after the discovery of dozens of other eggs on a construction site, reported Wednesday the official Xinhua news agency. Of the 43 dinosaur eggs found Sunday in the nest, 19 are intact, said Du Yanli, the curator of the Museum of Heyuan, town located in Guangdong province (south), which, however, does not know what species these eggs are from. “These eggs are large, one of them even had a diameter of 13 centimeters,” said Du Yanli to Xinhua on Monday agency. All eggs were sent to the museum to preserve and examine them. Nearly 17,000 dinosaur eggs have been found in the municipality of Heyuan since 1996. A group of children playing on a construction site became the first to discover such fossils in the city, according Xinhua. The museum has been recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the holding with 10 copies 0008 the largest collection of dinosaur eggs in the world. All eggs held by the museum date back to the late Cretaceous (there are 89 to 65 million years ago), according to the Guinness website. They include eggs of the family oviraptorids and hadrosaurid (“duck beaks dinosaurs”).
