Google will close its photo service Picasa – 01net.com

Picasa is over soon. Google announced yesterday, Friday 12 February, it will close its former online photo service, to focus on the newest, Google Photos. “After careful consideration, we decided to abandon Picasa in the coming months, in order to focus entirely on a single photo service, Google Photos” , the group wrote in a blog note. He explains want to focus “one service that offers more features and functions on mobile and computer, rather than divide our efforts between two different products” . Photos Google was launched in May 2015.

But do not panic either. Obviously, Picasa users will not lose any of their photos. Google has already transferred all the photos stored in Picasa Web Albums to Google Photos, including replicating the entire organization albums. This transfer should also preserve the legends who will end up on Google Photos in the pane “Info” of each photo. Comments and tags, however, may be lost along the way.

But again, Google offers a solution. The web giant will create, for those who want it, an archive of their Picasa Web Albums, where all the related information will be available as before. The content can be viewed, downloaded or deleted, but it will be impossible to edit or create new albums. This process – stop Picasa Web Album and classic archive – will commence from 1st May.

A small revolution

The Picasa stop also relates to the Desktop application that allows organizing photos and upload them to Picasa Web Albums. This application will continue to function but no longer benefit from any support from 15 March. This means that there will be more patches or functionality additions. Google recommends using the Desktop application now Google Photos.

Disposal of Picasa is the end of an era. Bought in 2004 by Google, the software was a small revolution in image management and on-line because it was very simple and easy to use. . Bye bye Picasa
