Meteor shower in the southeast of France – Le Point

The sequence lasts only a few seconds, but the scene is splendid. A meteorite crossed the sky from the southeast of France on Wednesday. Images identified by the regional daily La Marseillaise.

It is 18 h 20 Wednesday, 17 February. A camera placed on the banks of snow rugby field of Valmorel (Savoy) films the match between local in Les Menuires in the Tournament of six stations. A match like any other when suddenly, in the background, a bright ball just tear the sky in the Alps before disappearing behind a mountain.



Six meteorite impacts

But the camera is not alone in seeing a meteorite crashing. Many Savoyards and inhabitants of neighboring departments, including Isere, contacted police and firefighters and described a similar luminous phenomenon.

On Thursday, the Dauphiné Libéré even wrote a “meteor rain would hit several departments of France since the phenomenon was observed throughout the south of France. ” Three impacts have affected the Isere, one in the Vercors, another in the Grésivaudan (south of Chambéry) and the last on Gières (near Grenoble), officials said.

The event n is not so rare, explains Bernard Melguen, author of the Meteorites, Messengers from space (Apogee, 2013) to francetv info: “It is estimated that each year 100 000 200 thousand tons of meteorites fall to Earth, so it rains every day. ” Nothing serious, therefore, all those who fell on Wednesday have done any damage nor victims.
