The agreement on the sharing and transfer of personal data in the European Union was validated by the European countries. Its implementation should take place shortly.
Privacy Shield is a set of rules on personal data transfers from European users to a third country. The principle is to establish a set of rules meant to ensure the reliability of data exchange between different online services.
A draft agreement on the transfer of data has received the green light representatives of the Member States of Europe. According to Reuters, this decision will allow to implement the terms of this text. A more formal agreement should be signed as soon as Tuesday. Large groups such as Google, Facebook or Mastercard have validated the approach.
As a reminder, the old agreement (called Safe Harbour) was invalidated last year on the grounds that no longer protected enough such information exchange. The revelations of Edward Snowden had in fact undermined the principle of an agreement between countries regarding personal data sharing but within a strict legal framework.
Still, Andrus Ansip, Vice President of the European Commission considers that “ Member States today expressed strong support for the EU-US Privacy Shield, ensuring the flow of transatlantic data into a new secure framework .”
