bring out the Captain in shock, the Yes, gingerbread Prosper and the bottle of Banga : the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), console 8-bit flagship of the 1980′s is back, and it’s worth a try. It is not a time for cakes, but, with the marketing Saturday 12 November from the NES Classic Mini, the re-edition miniature with 30 built-in games, Nintendo offers the opportunity for veterans of biting into a madeleine of Proust, as well as the most young people to immerse themselves in “La Pléiade” of video games thirty years ago.
Small problem with the length
bring out your most beautiful carpet. Not only to celebrate the event, but simply because, with the twenty centimeters that provides the thread of the controller, the NES Classic Mini will never let you sit there on the couch – except if you move closer to a quarter of a metre of the screen. Coupons short the suspense : the size dinky cable of the controller is by far the main defect of the product. We may suffer because of these savings tips effort on the part of Nintendo, which, incidentally, does not include ac adapter in the box (it is necessary to use one’s smartphone) : NES Mini is really mini, to all points of view.
But there is another way of seeing things. In fact, the half-piece of lace that acts as a cable has a profound vocation : to force you to draw on the power wire to get the NES Mini in the TV cabinet where sits already, imperial, PlayStation 4 and black lacquered Freebox design : this miniconsole is like a toy that is laying on the carpet in the middle of the living room.
Better, the NES Classic Mini requires you to leave the cozy couch where the adult collapses (admit it), to take a position, sitting cross-legged, on the floor, as a child once, in front of a television screen suddenly become giant. There, by the grace of a HDMI cable is a welcome and digital tvs diagonally greedy, the universe of 8-bit yesteryear turns back on with a size, a brightness, a quality of immersion previously unseen. The small box makes you a kid ; and, at 50 centimetres from the screen, the wonder and the rediscovery have the delicious flavour of the excitement.
Rediscovered in HD
timeless Donkey Kong and Pac-Man trilogy Super Mario Bros., the famous Legend of Zelda and its sequel, the lovely Kirby’s Adventure classics-action, such as Castlevania, Probotector (american version) or Megaman II, sports retro with Exitebike, Punch-Out !! and Tecmo Bowl, and even some unpublished, like the first Final Fantasy or the adventure game StarTropics… The NES Classic Mini offers a catalog both comprehensive and varied. We can still regret the absence of such-and-play (DuckTales, Ninja Turtles, Nintendo World Cup…) or just the inability to add any title to the list by default, but the library offers the state a true cocktail of pleasure intermingled, between nostalgia and discovery.
And even when we think we know the games, the image grain new can sometimes dispel misunderstandings several years old.
The quality of the emulation is flawless, almost too much : the French Nerd, developer of the console has pushed the faithful to transcribe the slightest slowing of time. The game experience is strictly identical to the one that could have players of the 1980s – and the purists can even opt for an effect mimicking the display blur of the tv cathode ray tubes of the time.
Behind her presentation, retro, and his posture nostalgic, this small box ultralight features of modern features are very welcome. Such as the ability to save any game, at any time, very convenient for securities on the challenge frequently another time.
games that stand the test of time
The games have not all aged the same way. in Pac-Man and Dr. Mario resisted with insolence the ravages of time. the Super C surprised by his grip of a flexibility and a dynamism very contemporary, just like the boxing game Punch-Out !! and his struggles worthy of a cartoon. The charm of the enchanting atmosphere of Metroid and Zelda continues to operate. in Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden and Megaman 2 recall that the difficulty was higher at the time, but wakes up the competitor buried, while the same experiments more summary as Gradius and Excitebike play. Apart from the great slowness of Final Fantasy and the limited interest of Balloon Fight andIce Climber, the magic works.
Of the rest, € 60 with a controller included, the price is low : 2 euro the game, and 0,037 cents per hour of play time if you finish them all (calculating non-contractual). In spite of everything, some of them will report that it’s still more expensive than a conventional software emulation, or as a console retro without rights. The choice belongs to each of us : these provide similar functionality, and especially the possibility of non-negligible amount of try to almost the entire catalog of the console. But sometimes at the price of a quality experience.
The NES Classic Mini offers legal experience (if you don’t want to take the risk of being reincarnated as a cactus in a subsequent life), and especially a quality of the emulation flawless, a controller exactly identical to the original, of the sensations of the faithful, and this I-don’t-know-what-wonder back in the world the Nintendo of the 1980s in details the most innocuous of the packaging. It is, finally, with its crisp and its games unifying, a great opportunity to organize an evening of retro home. Or better, a taste of retro – bars Inca, Tropico, some Raider and a glass of Tang.
In brief
We liked :
- the atmosphere of Metroid the mystery of Zelda the secrets of Mario ;
- the meeting of all these classics of the 1980s ;
- child 60 euros, not expensive ;
- play sitting on the floor cross-legged to the old ;
- the best box of the history of boxes ;
- the ability to save anytime : thank you, thank you, thank you.
We did not liked :
- the second controller not integrated (count 10 euros) ;
- the colleague pro-Sega who is coming to our midget (traitor !) ;
- and Duck Tales ? and Nintendo World Cup ? and [insert here the name of your favorite game of the time] ?
- the wire from the controller is the size of a shoelace, but that does not fit in the holes of the shoes.
It is rather for you if :
- you don’t have to look for ” Banga “, “Inca” and “Tang” in Google ;
- you want a gaming experience that is simple, direct, and travel back in time ;
- are you looking to grow your son is in treatment rehab Call of Duty.
This is rather not for you if :
- play to 50 centimeters from the screen bothers you ;
- you play on an overhead projector of 5 meters in diagonal.
- you are pro-Sega and prefer to rot in hell than join finally the camp from the Property.
note Pixels :
the 7.9-bit on 8.
