The traffic information service Bing Maps provides access to surveillance cameras – 01net

Bing Maps or Bing Maps for French users, is the online mapping service Microsoft. Accessible from any web browser, it enables to prepare a route for both holiday departures for trips daily. Indeed, the online service already integrates and already traffic information to avoid as much as possible the most congested areas or, for the less patient, deferring a start. And for such a service is reliable, there is no miracle, it is necessary that the information is updated and rich enough to be reliable … which is not always the case.

Microsoft Bing Maps – The image refresh time seems long

With this evolution of Bing Maps, Microsoft offers its users an idea for themselves. Thus, in addition to traces of red, orange, yellow or green depending on traffic density, they have access to cameras monitoring road … 35,000 according to Microsoft. Finally a pretty fun way to see if a road is full, if another is not closed or under construction. The snag for us French motorists is that this service is available in eleven countries (including the USA, of course) and that we are not concerned.

While this development may prove interesting, it gives (in our opinion) not mean the Bing Maps service at its competitors, Google Maps, Waze or Here. These include delivering mobile applications and often more reactive than the online interface of the Microsoft service.

In addition, we have experienced by seeking more areas on the map of the United States providing access to the cameras. In a first case, even refreshing the image captured by the camera after several minutes (perhaps not enough), it remains the same, with the same vehicle. For others, downright message indicates that the service is inaccessible. It’s strange for a service that is called “real time”. Perhaps is it still bugs youth …
