Firefox : renewal in 2017 with Quantum ? – ZDNet France

“We fight for the gains in performance of Quantum to be so sensitive that your Web experience a whole different” says David Bryant, head of Mozilla, the engineering of the platform, in a blog post.

the ambitions of the foundation are clear : unable to bounce back in the face of Chrome, Firefox, indeed, has need of a true revival to take hold. It is the object of the new engine Quantum, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2017… Yes not before as the engine that should replace the older Gecko rendering engine is all new.

“The pages will load faster and scrolling will be in any fluidity. The animations and interactive applications will respond instantly and will be able to manage the content more heavy, while maintaining the refresh rate at the height. And the content most important to you will automatically obtain the more high priority, concentrating the power where you want it most need.”, promises Mozilla.

let us Recall that Quantum is based on the project experimental Servo is written in Rust. Pursuing the philosophy of the project Electrolysis, it is even more gain in velocity, by better exploiting the possibilities of processors with several cores. The move to the multithreaded architecture should allow for the display of pages 4 to 7 times faster than with the earlier version of Firefox.

In parallel, Mozilla has introduced at the beginning of the month for the first time the Project Mortar, a new initiative that aims to allow Firefox to rely on the functionality of Chromium, rather than developing some secondary modules in-house. “The goal of this project is to reduce the complexity and maintenance of Firefox on the long-term.” Concretely, Firefox wants to rely on open source modules third party to reduce the amount of time spent on features that are not absolutely critical to the browser.
