Vivaldi 1.0: the new browser designed for demanding users – 01net.com

You would think the browser market increasingly frozen. Well no, there are still people who think that everything has not yet been tried in this field, and this is the case of Vivaldi.

Founded by CEO Jon von Tetzchner, former co-founder of Opera, the Norwegian company has launched version 1.0 of its eponymous browser. “The five major market browsers offer more or less the same. They are browsers who seek to be simple in order to target as wide an audience as possible. This is not a bad thing, but we believe that there are also users who want to access a wide range of advanced features. This is what we want to do with Vivaldi “, explains the manager.

from this point of view, it is true that this new software contrasts with the rest of the market. Once installed, it provides access not only to a wide range of settings, but also some unique features, designed for demanding users. Which is reminiscent … Opera at the big time.

So, Vivaldi is revealed immediately as the kingdom shortcuts. It features 13 shortcut gestures in the mouse that, at first glance, seem practical. They allow to reload a page, to return to the previous or next page, open a tab stop loading, etc. The user can also use nearly sixty keyboard shortcuts for example, hide all or part of the user interface, distribute tabs, zoom, etc.

Another nice feature: note taking. When the user browses the web, it can at any time create a dated note text that retain the URL and a screenshot.

in addition, to avoid multiple tabs on the screen, the browser allows stacking simply by dragging them onto each other. Simplifying at the same time looking for a particular tab. On the screen, the tabs can also be juxtaposed side by side or grid, which allows viewing multiple pages simultaneously. Useful, for example, when surfing the web while keeping an eye on the news wire.

Under the hood, Vivaldi uses the rendering engine of Google, namely Blink. “It is now the one who displayed the greater dynamic, which is reassuring from the point of view of development” says Jon von Tetzchner. One consequence of this technical choice is that the browser is compatible from the outset with most of Chrome extensions. Moreover, the “Vivaldi Web Store” is, for now, directly connected to the Chrome Web Store. However, extensions of the performance is not necessarily identical. The extension of LastPass, for instance, is remarkably slower than Chrome on Vivaldi. But it works.

No
user account

What we regret, for this version 1.0, it is impossible to create an account that backs up the settings and navigation data. Which would end up on every terminal the same browsing environment. “It’s true, it’s very important and it is planned for a later version” , reassuring the CEO. Other advanced features are also on the roadmap, such as an integrated e-mail client.

In short, Vivaldi wants to offer a complete web platform for all those who really spend much time on the canvas. A vision that defends and that the CEO would have wanted to achieve with Opera. “I left it Opera a few years ago for reasons of strategic differences. Opera is a great browser, and I am proud. But today it has become a streamlined browser like any other. Many features have been removed on the basis of a statistical optimization. We believe that Vivaldi height of this view lack “, said the leader
