Launched in 2007, Dawn arrived in orbit of Ceres recently. This NASA satellite is to observe the dwarf planet and Vesta, another protoplanet in the asteroid belt. The probe will provide topographical information, measure the size, composition and mass of the two asteroids to better understand the genesis of the solar system.
Ceres is the only dwarf planet to move in the main asteroid belt. Its diameter is about 950 km away. This is the most massive object located between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres probably consists of ice surrounding a rocky core and an atmosphere which contains water vapor.
