It was so far a true Arles. No one had yet seen the Apple autonomous car but everyone was assured of its existence. The newspaper The Guardian just to get first written documents proving the existence of secret Titan project.
This is an exchange of letters between Apple engineers and representatives of GoMentum Station, an abandoned naval base in the Bay of San Francisco. A place located sixty kilometers of Sunnyvale where the company leases a building from 2014 which houses the staff dedicated to driverless cars.
GoMentum Station has become a preferred testing ground for autonomous cars. Mercedes-Benz and Honda will have already conducted tests, for example. It must be said that its strengths are many: over 32 km of paved roads, streets, viaducts, tunnels and crossings. It is, moreover, a closed public place, protected from curious by barbed wire and guarded by the army. Ideal for Apple and its cult of secrecy.
Apple has poached hundreds of engineers at Tesla and Mercedes in recent months to speed up its project. Tim Cook had even met the boss of Fiat Sergio Marchionne Crysler last year. Not sure that’s enough to catch up with its competitors Google, Tesla, Uber and many car manufacturers already launched in the niche.
