Situated between the Sun and Earth, the satellite DSCOVR (Deep Space Climate Observatory) is located in an ideal position to enjoy a perfect illumination of the Earth and the Moon, explains the blog “Around the sky” of the World. These images are also rare because here we see the dark side of our natural satellite. From Earth, we see only one side of the Moon as it rotates on itself in addition to orbit the planet.
NASA explains that the first images of the far side of the moon back to 1959. They had been photographed by the Soviet Luna 3, a Soviet satellite. Several missions of NASA have since captured these images but rarely in such a high quality.
