Apple is working on a system that would be much more efficient than lithium-ion batteries to power its devices. The work of the firm is on track as it has filed a patent for a fuel cell capable of offering electronic devices autonomy that exists only in the dreams of users today.
Apple is currently developing the fuel cell
The site of the Office of US patents has just published a patent filed by Apple which describes a “ fuel cell system that supplies a laptop “. Although the engineers of the California firm have always done a good job regarding the autonomy of home products, their expertise could never be compared to the fuel cell system. This type of batteries can store a lot of energy without being very cumbersome. Indeed, they could fit in a portable electronic device such as a laptop, a tablet and even a smartphone.
These batteries are generally composed of hydrogen but Apple explains in his patent and other chemical compounds could be used, such as sodium silicate, lithium hydride or sodium borohydride, again with water to create the reaction.

This fuel battery system may be associated with a conventional battery. Thus the excess energy produced could be sent and stored in a lithium-ion battery. Apple also talks about super capacitor to store energy.
The British company Intelligent Energy recently presented a prototype iPhone whose autonomy was pushed up to a week thanks to the installation of a hydrogen fuel cell. The size and design of the device remain the same as the rear part of the apparatus adapted to evacuate heat and steam produced.
These batteries are not only unbeatable in autonomy but they are also more environmentally friendly. While there is still much work before marketing, we hope they land on the market before too long.
