Renault has taken its time. The French manufacturer will market its first hybrid vehicle in 2017, 20 years after the Toyota Prius. Renault announced Tuesday at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Its next-generation Mégane could consume less than three liters per 100 km.

While the diamond brand presents world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show the average sedan Megane, fourth name since 1995, revealed that “supply diesel electrified, called ‘Hybrid Assist’, will be available early 2017″ on this model. With this unique powertrain, “Renault is targeting CO2 emissions reduced to 76g / km” and subject to approval consumption “less than 3L / 100 km,” said the manufacturer in a statement.

Energy recovery braking

These figures, the same source, will be obtained “through energy recovery during deceleration and braking phases,” while “the system will provide Furthermore an acceleration on some phases of operation, especially at low speeds. “

This will be the first hybrid model of Renault, which had hitherto relied, in addition to its classic range on 100% electric propulsion, with trading results that were not at the rendezvous expectations. The French market of electricity should represent 1% of sales this year, against 0.59% in 2014.

PSA already on that front

The company headed by Carlos Ghosn had already announced his intentions with a hybrid prototype, the Eolab, presented at the Paris a year ago. PSA Peugeot Citroën Renault ahead in the field of diesel hybrid, with a “Hybrid4″ premium oriented. The boss of the group, Carlos Tavares, promised for the end of the decade the output of rechargeable hybrid cars on gasoline sector, such as those currently spreading in the ranges of German manufacturers under pressure from CO2 emissions standards more increasingly stringent.

This is Toyota who popularized this technology with the Prius with the Japanese giant, after having passed eight million hybrids worldwide since 1997, presents in Frankfurt the fourth version.
