Discover a security vulnerability is never very reassuring for users. But when is the day after Christmas and it concerns the main selling online store for computer video games, it’s worse.
Users of the Steam platform had cold sweats , Thursday, December 25 mid-evening: a number of them have found, by logging into their account, that is not posted their personal information but those other users
. All internal account data were thus made visible to third parties, including e-mail address or history of purchased games. Some users have a pre-recorded in their credit card account to more easily adjust their purchases: some players were concerned that it is possible to buy games in their name. One possibility quickly ruled by a moderator of one of the Steam forums, which, for lack of a public source of official information, made during the evening office unofficial spokesman Valve, the company that publishes Steam.
Fixed
According to the moderator, Steam has not hacked, and causing the bug is purely technical. Several specialized sites dedicated to Steam had also suggested this hypothesis.
The platform has however been offline for about an hour, probably the time to correct the fault. The moderator of the forums has updated his message late at night, with the first official communication of business:
“Steam is back online and running smoothly. We believe that no fraudulent action has been performed beyond the undue display of certain data. No action is required from users. “
