Happy Holidays: Christmas Full Moon, a first in 38 years – RTL.fr

More festivities occupied by the allure of the night sky, not everyone may have not noticed the phenomenon. Full Moon was invited last night on the evening of Christmas Eve for the first time since 1977. Earth satellite will reappear on the evening of December 24 in 19 years, in 2034.

In an article published on his official website, NASA recalls the importance our near neighbor. “The geological history of the Moon and Earth are intimately related, explains John Keller, the Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, Maryland. The Earth would be a radically different planet without the Moon” he recalls.

The US space agency conducts since 2009 observation campaign of the Moon through its “Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter” (LRO) that analyzes the lunar surface with seven powerful instruments. These have enabled find the impact point of the space mission Apollo 16 module , conducted 43 years ago. The location of the crash remained a mystery to scientists since 1972.
