Full Moon at Christmas for the first time in 38 years – France Soir

This is a calendar of astronomical events more than a coincidence, but it is sufficiently rare for NASA stresses. For the first time since 1977, the Moon will be full on Christmas Day. Already some imagine seeing the shadow of Santa, his sleigh and his reindeer pull away in the light of our natural satellite.

This poetic event does not happen again elsewhere before Christmas 2034 notes the US space agency. The Moon is in fact perfectly full only once every 28 days or so, at a specific time, because soon she will again decrease, although in the early days it is even (almost) round.

Everyone will therefore not have the privilege to admire the full moon during the night of Christmas. In France, it will not reach that point until Friday 25 to 12:11. A large part of the country, however, benefit from a clear sky to admire it. It is the US that it will come off in the sky in the Christmas night, to 6:11, time for the East Coast.

“When we look at the moon for such an occasion It is useful to recall (it) is more than a celestial neighbor , “said John Keller, the center of NASA Goddard (Maryland). “The geological history of the Moon and Earth are closely linked so that the Earth would be a totally different planet without the Moon” , he said.

Full Moon occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned in that order. Sunlight illuminates then the entire face of our satellite.

Having been long neglected since its conquest in the 60 and 70, the Moon made new dream various space agencies. NASA, the LRO probe currently around the Moon, considering manned observation flights in 2021, and then astronauts will arise again walk around 2030. The Russians hope to go as soon as 2029.
