Telecom: Orange in the heart of maneuvers – Le Figaro

The French incumbent is at the forefront of the consolidation operations in France and Europe.

The calendar big moves in telecoms is accelerating. On the one hand, discussions are open between Orange and Bouygues Telecom for a rapprochement between the two groups. The path will be a long and difficult for a high-risk transaction from the standpoint of competition authorities. But it has the merit to appease a market shaken by four years of fierce price competition.

The move from four to three operators on the French market has become a recurring theme for over eighteen months. Several schemes have been put on the table. But today is one of the most unexpected that grew in strength: the recovery of Bouygues Telecom Orange. With what chances of success? “The discussions start, but there is the will of both sides, especially the two leaders appreciate,” says one observer.

Meanwhile, Vivendi prepares its defenses to consolidate its positions in Telecom Italia. The French media group chaired by Vincent Bolloré, who owns 20% of the Italian telecom operator, hopes to get four board seats and influence the evolution of the capital project. For this, he will have to convince shareholders at two general meetings which are held on Tuesday in Milan.
