CyanogenMod is dead, but this is not inevitable. In fact, many communities have created custom ROM based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project), here are a few.
what is a custom ROM ?
Android is open-source version of Android Open Source Project (AOSP). You can also download the source code, modify it, compile it, and distribute it.
This is exactly what businesses, developers and communities. They download AOSP, modify it and compile. Why ? To offer experiences are often more close to Android Stock, to make updates faster than the manufacturers, but also to add optimizations and new features.
Paranoid Android
Paranoid Android is the ROM alternative the most well-known after CyanogenMod. Nearly 300,000 users have adopted this ROM that is compatible on many devices from many brands, including OnePlus, Samsung or Nexus and Oppo.
MIUI
Developed by Xiaomi tech, MIUI can be regarded as a true fork of Android. For once, MIUI brings a real difference compared to Android Stock, with dozens of new features and an interface that is very different. The latest MIUI version 8 brings numerous options, one of advanced security mode and a new gallery of images.
MIUI exists on many devices, there are also ROMS that incorporate the French language. If you are interested, we recommend this very comprehensive dossier on the installation of MIUI.
CarbonROM
also Based on AOSP, and CarbonROM is now a few years. Unfortunately, the team behind this project relied heavily on the work of CyanogenMod, incorporating pieces of codes developed by Cyanogen Inc..
This is a ROM very sober, with some unique features, including a pocket mode and a menu of quick launch. Very few devices are supported, among them : the Nexus 6 or the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact.
Slim ROM
Slim ROM is still very dynamic, the company supports many Galaxy S, but also HTC, OnePlus, LG and Nexus. Slim 6 (Android 6.0) is in its final version, while the development of Slim 7 (for Android 7.0) has already started.
What is significant with these ROM : the team really reduce the weight of the ROM and optimizes everything that can be optimized.
OmniROM
OmniROM is quite recognized, it is one of ROM alternative the most followed. Behind this project we find the French Guillaume Lesniak, who had left CyanogenMod when Cyanogen Inc. had been launched. It is a ROM more suited for beginners, and very simple to use. By contrast, the list of supported devices is not huge.
OxygenOS
For users OnePlus, OxygenOS is a ROM developed by OnePlus. Based on AOSP, it offers a few additional features and is still simple to use.
The custom ROMS are not missing, there are versions of Android that are designed by the manufacturers, such as ColorOS for products OPPO or EMUNI for Huawei and Honor, there is also ROM dedicated to certain devices, maintained by one or more independent developers. Please do not hesitate to share your experience in comments, specifying the model that you have heard.
As you will notice, many developers based on CyanogenMod, not AOSP. The development of this ROM could therefore be slowed down, the time that LineageOS resume the relay.
We can also ask ourselves if the development of ROM alternative is a market of the future, many of the community have slowed down the pace, some of them have completely stopped their activities. But, that is another debate.
