LineageOS : everything you need to know about the new CyanogenMod – Frandroid

After the announcement of Cyanogen Inc. on their official blog, a lot of people are confused. Some people were convinced that nothing would change in relation to their custom ROM preferred, however, things will change. However, the team behind CyanogenMod stops his development to focus on a few other projects. Fortunately, contributors and a part of the team come to announce the arrival of LineageOS.

What is LineageOS ?

CyanogenMod is renamed LineageOS (or Lineage Android). We heard about this project on the 12 December 2016, which has been confirmed since the announcement of Cyanogen Inc. on the 25th of December. This project is probably led by Steve Kondik, founder of CyanogenMod.

The scenarios on the suite are still rather vague, because we lack information about this new project and this new team. What we know :

  • LineageOS is based on the code CyanogenMod the latest nightlies
  • in practice, it is a fork CyanogenMod — a new code to be created from the existing source code

Who is behind LineageOS ?

It is very likely that Steve Kondik himself is behind the project. He announced work on his new adventure. After a few tweets, the vast majority of the contributors of CyanogenMod would have joined LineageOS, or would want to do it. Other contributors have decided to create some side-projects or join Paranoid Android (AOSPA), an alternative to CyanogenMod.

How to follow LineageOS ?

It is already possible to follow LineageOS on different media, social networks, website, but also a GitHub. At the time of writing, the project takes shape and the pages are filled.

What will become of CyanogenMod ?

CyanogenMod no longer exists, the servers were taken offline on December 25, 2016. The team has decided to close this service because there are strong chances that the company Cyanogen Inc. be resold to third parties, which would have obliged the community CyanogenMod to exchange with the acquirer.

LineageOS is a prime fork but it’s a safe bet that other forks to be created from the source code of CM, many developers — old of Cyanogen Inc. or independent — will take advantage of this announcement to get started in the creation of custom ROMS.

I’m under CyanogenMod, what is it that I do ?

You will not be able to, for the time, to update CyanogenMod directly. The servers are no longer online at the time of writing these lines. Some observers have presented the idea that OTA updates could resume, which seems unlikely.

According to a few developers related to the new project, the devices that could take advantage of LineageOS would be based on the stable branch of CM (basically, devices that were supported officially by Cyanogen Inc.). This is the case of the OnePlus 3, for example, but this is not the case for a large portion of the devices that took advantage of CyanogenMod.

You can wait, or decide to pass on Paranoid Android, or other ROM alternatives, depending on your device.

I am running CyanogenOS, what do I do ?

CyanogenOS is the ROM commercial based on CyanogenMod. It is found on a few devices, including smartphones sold by Wileyfox. For the time being, our advice is to wait for : Cyanogen Inc. could continue to maintain and update these devices.

In fact, Cyanogen should propose now to manufacturers to be part of the Modular OS Program to integrate the famous MODs, pieces of Cyanogen OS, Android and the interface of the constructor. The editor was the demonstration of Truecaller mod, that enables the phone to recognize nearly $ 2 billion worth of phone numbers automatically.
