Samsung develops flexible batteries, innovation continues – ZDNet France

The Achilles heel of our connected devices is at the level of battery: whether autonomy or space, a problem more and more significant with connected objects smaller than our smartphones. But we know, in this field, innovations are increasing even if they have yet to turn into consumer products.

latest episode, a new battery technology
both soft and flexible unveiled by Samsung. Two prototypes were unveiled: “Stripe” and “Band”. The first presents a design of 0.3 mm thickness that could comply with any
kind of accessories and clothing line: watches, bracelets, headbands,
 shirt …

The second is intended rather to connected watches: thicker, but also flexible, it can be twisted more than 50,000 times around a human wrist.

Samsung gives no details about these batteries, indicating
they are simply the product of a blend of several technologies
developed separately. For example, the battery “Band” could be
used as a bracelet to a watch connected to increase its
 initial range of 50%.

Samsung did not announce for the moment plan
concrete for the introduction of these new batteries.

In the same spirit, scientific discovery can evoke
Stanfordon. They managed to develop a
functional aluminum-ion battery. The latter does not fail
advantages: aluminum is more environmentally friendly than litium, its
Use can fold the battery, extend endurance and
reduce time to recharge: one minute may be sufficient, the
 mobinaute dream for any self-respecting.

Other benefits:
less propensity to heat (and thus to ignite), point becoming
prégnant in our smartphones, and reduced unit costs.

presented may issue a battery voltage of 2 volts and support
7500 charge cycles, first with aluminum. Remember that
traditional batteries “star” about 1000 cycles.

The team
led by Hongjie Dai explains chemist have passed this breakthrough
accidentally finding that graphite providing excellent
performance when coupled to aluminum, said in a
 Stanford University news release.

Google
through its Google X laboratory, would work in secret
two years on new technologies related to this component
 sensitive.

According to the WSJ, the project would be led by Dr.
Ramesh Bhardwaj, a specialist in storage, which notably
worked for Lockheed Martin and Apple. Four scientists would
part of the team. The idea is obviously to improve the autonomy of
Andrroid terminals but also: autonomy is a problem
Google Glass for central or autonomous cars.

Work would focus around the conventional technology
Lithium-ion (most used today), but engineers
also are working on other approaches as the solid electrolyte.

In Microsoft Ranveer Chandra, a researcher
among the giant board on the issue. The
Science says it all: meet again one week
 autonomy without recharging.

How
? Without waiting for new technologies, the scientist offers
better use of the existing. This would for example to combine two
thin batteries to a smartphone with dedicated tasks, such as
processors. The first would feed energy-intensive functions,
second would be content to run the basic functions, to
 avoid failure.

The system would according to researcher
earn 20-50% more autonomy. Must still have
sufficiently thin batteries are received in more frame
 finer …

This technique should be combined, according Ranveer Chandra, in Device Software Optimization. Many manufacturers also offer integrated applications to smartphones that reduce consumption or even get in “survival” when autonomy is close to zero.
