Integrated with more than 800,000 sites and used by over 250 million users, Google Maps is the online mapping service most used in the world. The application had until now a major problem. She was unable to guide users without sufficient speed internet. In the countryside, abroad without suitable package in an underground car park, a tunnel and more widely within 60% of the planet that are not covered by the internet, the application showed only a restricted zone a region and did not allow to get directions. Google finally decided to beef up its functions offline.
You still have to download the map of the areas
The Mountain View Computer Group began deploying Tuesday, November 10 a new version of its mapping application to guide users to their destinations even without internet access. Since 2012, an offline mode has minimum allowed to download maps to view portions without an Internet connection. Google Maps now allows you to use the features of the application without connection. The new version allows for detailed directions when you are driving, find a specific destination and access practical information such as opening hours of shops, for example.
To benefit, you must, however, consider downloading the map of a city or a region previously , by entering its name into the search bar and clicking “download”. Once the card is stored in the “Offline Areas” (off-line areas), the application works in offline automatically when it finds that the user is in an area with no connection or uneven flow. Nevertheless, the conventional functions of the application are not as efficient as online. Route calculation takes no account of such real-time traffic.
Coming Soon on iPhone
The application is preset to only download maps when the device has a wireless connection to avoid buckling to the amount charged by the mobile operator for data consumed. This feature was announced at a conference for developers organized by the group earlier this year. It is limited in the short to devices using Android, the mobile operating system from Google . A version for the iPhone and the Apple iPad is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
“Google Maps is taking action to help people around the world find their way and get to the place where they go, even when they have no internet connection,” said Amanda Bishop, product manager at Google, in a message posted on the band’s website. “Now you can download an area of the world on your phone, and the next time you find yourself without a connection – be it on a country road or parking in the basement – Google Maps continue to function without problem.”
