Windows 1.0 came out 30 years ago: A retrospective – JDN

The first version of Windows was launched on 20 November 1985. Retrospective of 30 years of history.

Windows 1.0 is launched November 20, 1985, two years after Bill Gates was unveiled for the first time to the public. Designed around a GUI layer based on MS-DOS, it was immediately adopted by companies manufacturer of MS-DOS computers. But it was not until 1990 and the release of Windows 3.0 that OS wins his first real commercial success. This version introduced including better memory management and the ability to run MS-DOS programs in their own window.

In August 1995 out Windows 95. A version that is very close Windows that we know today. In particular, it inaugurated the Start button and taskbar. It is also Windows 95 that enabled Microsoft to win against the Mac desktop. Among the most significant versions of the OS, Windows 98 will follow (with the arrival of the Internet Explorer browser), Windows XP (opus recognized for its stability), and Windows 7, still widely used today.

Finally, in July 2015, Microsoft launched Windows 10. It presents a new design, a start menu similar to that of Windows 7, universal applications (laptops on the mobile version of the OS, Windows Mobile 10) or new safety features, among others (see complete retrospective of JDN).
