Google has given the Android Nougat kick by making available the last Nexus models and others. This new version is a significant change to the system and the group, which improves its distribution system on its terminals.
The new Android is there. Last night, Google officially released Android 7.0 (nougat), after a series of public betas in recent months, via a new dedicated program. Today, the group begins OTA deployment of the new system on terminals house built in less than two years. No action is required by the user, even if registration in the beta program appears to accelerate the process.
Are concerned Nexus 5 X Nexus 6 Nexus 6 P Nexus 9 Nexus Player , Pixel C and General Mobile 4G ( Android One ). The update is deployed in stages, terminals acquired from an operator can receive it later than others. This major release sign the limit for Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) out there now three years old. The Android 7.0 image for éligibiles terminals are not yet online.
Multi-windows, Vulkan, better autonomy and security
The new Nougat have been known for several months . Besides a slight facelift, the interface adopts mainly a multi-window mode to smartphone and tablets , which can display two applications side by side. An expected feature long, already present in the Code of Marshmallow and proposed number of overlays. We had already presented in March, on the occasion of the first Developer Preview. The system also introduces a new style for emoji, numbering 1500 now (72 new).
the notifications also improved, with automated grouping by application and quick answers more practical. Doze, deep standby function is active now when the screen is off, not when the device is laid flat and inactive for some time. Multitasking is also enriched, for example through the addition of a fast switching between applications by pressing twice on the dedicated button on the bottom screen.
Android 7.0 also brings support the graphics API Vulkan supposed to provide much better performance OpenGL graphics (but you need the games to be adapted accordingly). The ART engine applications (applications that precompiles) is also seen supplemented by a “just in time” (JIT) compiler, also supposed to help the system performance. At the same time, Linux kernel security is strengthened.
For the next terminal, updates will be more transparent. They may be made directly by the system, without displaying recompiling applications for each change of the system. Encryption, it is much more modular by acting file, not by volume.
A upheaval for Android, the LG V20 opens Nougat
The launch in August is a significant change for Google, which usually favors an event in October or November, with the presentation of new Nexus devices. By iterating on its publicly betas and out this new version in the summer, so the group gets ahead of schedule. Manufacturers and therefore the version in hand to adapt more quickly to their terminals, especially that part of them is formally committed to providing new releases 90 days after their release, on some devices.
For now, any new devices or stamped Nexus Pixel are not yet known. The first smartphone to be commercially Nougat inaugurate the LG V20, which we still know little. It will be officially presented by the Korean manufacturer on 6 September. For the record, LG is already the author of Nexus 5 (X), which brings to a close relationship with Google.
Rest still nearly 30% of devices are running Android 4.4, which dates from the end of 2013. Android 6.0 and 5.x barely exceeded half of the park earlier this month.
The beta program remains active for Nougat
“ Keep in mind that if your device remains on the beta program, you will automatically receive an OTA update for future pre-release of future maintenance drafts, as they become available “explains Orrin Hancock, community manager of Nexus program on Google +.
on his blog for developers, the Android team already states prepare the first update to the new system, which should be available in the fall. This program reminds every feature the Windows Insiders from Microsoft, that allows developers and enthusiasts to see the new system in advance. One big difference: Google offers this time an update circuit, while the Redmond Group offers two cycles, fast with all the updates, and slow with the most stable
